What would you do to stop the sealhunt? http://bit.ly/aof9iF

Canada – if you cancel the sealhunt, I will host a Canadian-themed party. What would you do? Make an offer here: http://bit.ly/aof9iF

and support this campaign from Humane Society International/Canada

The ices are melting, the seals are dying anyway, no one is really interested in buying their fur any more and Canadian government is considering to purchase “sealing licenses and investing in economic alternatives in the communities involved” to stop seal-hunting – so what are we waiting for –            LET’S SAVE THE SUPER-CUTE SEALS =)

Subject:     Guess who else is ready for the seal slaughter to end

April 6, 2010
I’m heartened by the latest news out of Canada: A recent poll just found that many Newfoundland sealers consider ending the hunt to be the best option after all. Ask your friends to join you in telling the Canadian government to stop the killing now!

In the survey, half of Newfoundland sealers holding an opinion support a federal buyout of the commercial seal hunt. This plan would involve the Canadian government purchasing sealing licenses and investing in economic alternatives in the communities involved. Economists tell us that such a plan would cost Canada far less than keeping the seal hunt going.

A sealing industry buyout makes perfect sense:

Prices for seal fur are falling fast following the European Union ban on seal product trade.

Around the world, commercial sealing is coming to an end, with Russia having banned its commercial seal slaughter last year.

With sea ice continuing to deteriorate, sealers face dangerous conditions and fewer seals are surviving the birthing season.

And sealers are feeling the impact of a boycott of Canadian seafood that will continue until the seal slaughter stops for good.
Given all of these factors, it’s outrageous that the Canadian government continues to subsidize the commercial seal slaughter — even increasing the hunt quota by 50,000 this year despite the deaths of thousands of seal pups due to poor ice conditions.

We must keep the pressure on! Thousands of people from around the world are pledging to do whatever it takes to convince Canada to stop slaughtering seals for their fur. I’ve been asking my friends to send Canada a message. Please ask your friends to do so, too.

Within days, the sealers will reach the few pups who have managed to survive, clinging to tiny pans of melting ice. So let’s pull out all the stops and get every animal lover we know to stand up for seals today. You can update your Facebook status and Tweet your pledge to challenge your friends to pressure Canada to do the right, reasonable thing.

Thank you so much for standing with me and tens of thousands of caring people from around the globe who are helping protect seals.

Sincerely,

Rebecca Aldworth

Weird “New World Order” Debate article published today in the most influential swedish newspapers: DN and SVD

Today there was a debate article on written by Bo Ekman from the Tällberg Foundation, promoting some kind of New World Order in Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet, the two most influential newspapers in Sweden.

The headline of the article was: En ny världsordning ett måste efter debaclet i Köpenhamn = A new world order is a must after the debacle in Copenhagen. Here a quote from the article which summarizes its message:

Men om nu 192 nationer ändå skulle ha kommit överrens om det ”perfekta avtalet”, så saknas i upplägget den tillsynsmyndighet som med ekonomisk, polisiär och militär makt skulle ha kunnat korrigera de nationer som av olika skäl inte skulle möta åtaganden och mål.

But if 192 nations would have agreed on the “perfect deal” (in Copenhagen), the idea/plan were missing the control instance, which with economic and military power as well as a police force could correct the nations which of different reasons would not meet their commitments and goals.

One of my comments on this debate-article:

First of all, this article has very little to do with the climate crisis, and very much to do with global power.

I am a citizen of the world, and would love to live in a more democratic society on a global and a local scale, in cooperation, understanding, exchange, justice – peace and love! But I want to avoid a world government with a world army which has too much power and is ruled by some obscure elite – which is almost reality already.

Unfortunately there are well founded worries that Mr Ekman (Tällberg Foundation) and his friends are supporting an small part of society – the “elite” – some of them even without thinking about it. And of those who know what they are doing, many believe they are doing it for a good cause. Others are thinking that they are just behaving pragmatically.

Many things that Ekman wrote in his article are true: he talked about the urgency in solving the environmental crisis and UN:s apperent incapacity in doing so. The problem is that he is presenting irrational solutions on real problems. There are guaranteed many better and more constructive ways to solve humanities problems than the one which he suggests.

save the copenhagen deal!! mail from avaaz

With three days to go, the crucial Copenhagen summit is failing.

Tomorrow, the world’s leaders arrive for an unprecedented 60 hours of direct negotiations. Experts agree that without a tidal wave of public pressure for a deal, the summit will not stop catastrophic global warming of 2 degrees.

Click below to sign the petition for a real deal in Copenhagen — the campaign already has a staggering 10 million supporters – let’s make it the largest petition in history in the next 72 hours! Every single name is actually being read out at the summit — sign on at the link below and forward this email to everyone!

An Avaaz team is meeting daily with negotiators inside the summit who will organize a spectacular petition delivery to world leaders as they arrive, building a giant wall of boxes of names and reading out the names of every person who signs. With the largest petition in history, leaders will have no doubt that the whole world is watching.

Millions watched the Avaaz vigil inside the summit on TV yesterday, where Archbishop Desmond Tutu told hundreds of delegates and assembled children:

“We marched in Berlin, and the wall fell.
“We marched for South Africa, and apartheid fell.
“We marched at Copenhagen — and we WILL get a Real Deal.”

Copenhagen is seeking the biggest mandate in history to stop the greatest threat humanity has ever faced. History will be made in the next few days. How will our children remember this moment? Let’s tell them we did all we could.
